Schools should do away with grades

Grades are used to monitor student learning, assess how much a student has learned, and to motivate and delineate students.  They can also be an inaccurate assessment or an unfair evaluation, and the disparity between teachers and schools is significant. Could we get away from them? What would that look like? What problems would it solve and what problems would it create?

I don't think schools should do away with grades. A lot of people work hard for good grades, so getting rid of them would allow everyone to have the same privileges when they don't have the same work ethic. What will scholarships or college acceptances be based on? Eradicating grades has more cons than pros.

6 points

No, grades are a solid way to motivate students, who need a milestone type system to know who well they are doing, also, it gives colleges and employers a way to estimate the intelligence or work ethic of a potential alumni or employee.

i argue that grades have a positive impact on students drive in school. When you have grades, it gives students something to work for, when you don't have grades, it causes students to take on the mindset that school doesn't matter easily.

3 points

Exactly, without grades, the student has no motivation, no felling of accomplishment when they do anything

3 points

Schools shouldn't do away with grades because grades help determine a student's performance, and you may not know which students are "meeting expectations" and which ones are not.

2 points

No because we wouldn't strive to be our best and it would cause kids to slack off and not actually try in school.

2 points

Grades are a significant part of school as they can determine whether you are trying to learn and striving to do your best. Although some might give up on learning because of circumstances other rise to the challenge due to the evaluation. If we do away with grades then what process is stopping students from not doing anything. This could result in a less intelligent people and lower all the technological advances.

I agree with this notion because it would do away with a lot of the stress of school and possibly even encourage some students to participate more. Students could be shown as real people and how they think and function rather than being shown as a combination of letter grades.

But, when they apply for a job, or when they try to enter college, how could the employer or the college informer know how smart or motivated you are, also, life is stressful, students should get use to this at a young age, and not get thrown into the real world without this kind of experience.

That's what I'm saying, there would be a new, better system to rank you. It would be less stressful and you would be more highly recognized. You would still be held accountable for things, it would just be a more effective system.

Although grades give students a drive, they also discourage us. I feel that there are better systems that will encourage without pressuring.

Kids don't need the extra stress from grades and they incentives rampant cheating.

Again, without grades, there is no incentive to learn, there is no drive to learn.

What causes stress? Grades, or no grades? What leads to cheating? Grades or no grades?

1 point

Grades are not what causes stress. Grades are just what monitor success. You shouldn't blame grades for stress that is caused from the classes. If you are stressed out, try talking to your teacher or changing classes.

I do agree that the added stress can hurt students emotionally and cause them to cheat, but shouldn't students have a chance at competing or comparing knowledge with other students?

1 point

Grades are important in school to distinguish different students abilities. If we do away with them it would not only force us to design an entirely new school system, very expensive, but it would remove our ability to set apart different students.

1 point

I don't think we should get rid of grades. It's one way of making us understand if we are doing well in a subject, or if we're understanding what were learning in that class. Taking away grades would make it harder for students to be aware of how they're doing in a class. Grades are helpful and shouldn't be taken away!

1 point

no, because then you have no motivation to do well in school

schools shouldn't get rid of grades because then the students have no way of motivating themselves to try

1 point

Grades are completely unneeded because they can reflect differently depending on whether or not students have a good group in a group project. This can lead to complete misinformation. Because of this highly possible discrepancy, we should do away with grades and instead switch to evaluations. Evaluations have also been proven to give better feedback.

1 point

I don't agree that schools should do away with grades. Grades tend to serve as motivation to students as well as an assessment of the growth and progress of students. Students would not be able to evaluate their understanding of subjects, this could lead to added pressure as they would not be able to monitor their understanding. My outlook on this topic is that instead of discarding grades we could make adjustments to the grading system. For example, the amount of the class grade based on test vs. homework/projects.

1 point

By doing away with grades, students are then subject to not try as hard to increase their knowledge. By giving a grade, not only can students test their academic ability, they can also compete with other students. Though students' stress can greatly increase by having to worry about what number will define them when applying for college, students are giving themselves a challenge to work for.

I do not think we should do away with grades. Grades are what show how well a student is doing in school. Without grades or a similar system, parents, colleges, and anyone else who wants to know how well a student is doing in classes would be unable to. Students would be able to slack more knowing that their progress would not be monitored
